While takeout pizza should not require any heating in the oven, the same can’t be said for store-bought pizza. While we typically decide on taking out, pizza purchased at the shop usually costs less and is simply very easy to whip up on a lazy evening.
As you may have probably noticed, pizza brought from the store always comes on a piece of cardboard. Most people, do sometimes use this cardboard to support the pizza as we set it back in the oven, and some even use it to take it out and support the pizza while cutting it more like a pizza cutting board.
Surprisingly, other people do leave their pizza right on the cardboard while it bakes in the oven. Is doing this safe, and is it recommended? In this article, we’ll tell you whether or not you should bake your pizza on the cardboard in the oven.

Is It Safe to Put Cardboard in the Oven?
No. It is actually not safe for you to put cardboard in the oven. Cardboard is combustible, so it can easily catch fire when heated at high temperatures for extended periods.
So, if cardboard shouldn’t be set within the oven, why are there so several claims of individuals doing it safely without having any issue or whatsoever? Well, there’s one good reason for this.
If you happen to set your pizza in the oven directly on a piece of cardboard, and it’s not getting to be in direct contact with a heating element. - Cook the pizza for 15-18 minutes depending on the number of ingredients on the pizza.
- After about 10 minutes of cooking, check every couple of minutes.
- When the cheese starts to brown the pizza is done.
- If crust starts to get well-done and cheese is not brown, put pizza on the top rack and broil a few minutes to brown the cheese.
- If you’re having trouble with the crust burning before you set the pizza within the oven wrap tin foil all way around the pizza crust. Leave the foil on the entire time the pizza is cooking.
- If the pizza was cooked directly on the rack, slide the pizza circle cardboard under the pizza to take it out from the rack.
- If you used a stone, you may serve the pizza directly from the stone.
Is It Safe to Eat Your Pizza if You Cook it on Cardboard?
You can, but apart from the probability of an open fire, the crust of the pizza will be soggy and probably taste like cardboard. It’s not advisable. The best thing is to put it on a sheet of pan or stone or lay some foil over the rack in your oven. Buh the easiest way is to throw it on a pan that disperses heat better than the cardboard.
What to Use For Cooking in the Oven Instead of Cardboard?
While we have concluded that it is not an honest, idea to cook your pizza directly on the cardboard base that it came with, there are some reasonable options to analyze.
1. Directly on the Rack
A better option that is often advised on the pizza packaging itself is to completely cook your pizza directly on an oven rack. By cooking your pizza on an oven rack, you are allowing for better heating from the underside of it, which should result in a crispier crust.
The major drawback with cooking directly on the oven rack is that you may likely end up with some grease and probably even some toppings falling off into your oven.
2. On a Pizza Stone
As the name implies, a pizza stone gives an excellent surface for cooking your pizzas. Pizza stones are commonly made of ceramic or stone and are usually known for giving a good heating surface and often produce pizzas with a crispy crust.
The crispy crust is produced as a result of the porous surface of the baking stone, which helps in removing some of the moisture from the underside of the pizza dough.
3. On a Pizza Pan
Another reliable option for cooking a pizza is to use a pizza frying pan. There are different styles of pans that are considered pizza pans, and each one of them has its benefits and flaws. Most, but not all, pizza pans are round, which is suitable for a typical store-bought pizza.
